What is the Student Survey?

Every semester, some teachers are evaluated. Part of the evaluation is a survey of the students from the teacher's class. Students answer basic questions about the class, the teacher, and the way the teacher teaches the class.

This page shows how to complete the survey in Canvas. Surveys are only available for a few weeks, so watch for an email or announcement about the dates.

If you don't get an email or message on your Dashboard about your teacher's evaluation, or a Student Survey on your course menu, you do not need to read further! Not all teachers are evaluated every semester.

Student Email Explained

Take a look at the email the Office of Instruction send to students.
Hover (move over) the vocabulary words if you need help.

Hello [Name of student],

The college is in the process of conducting a routine evaluation of your instructor. Part of this evaluation is a survey of the students in this class. Your feedback is very important to this evaluation process. The survey is anonymous and will take just a few minutes.

The survey, [Survey name] for [teacher name], is available starting today and will close on 11/8/2024 12:00 AM. You will see a link to the"Student Course Evaluations" survey when you log in to Canvas, or you can log in here: CCSF Evaluation Kit Login (Note: This link should not be shared with others; it is unique to you.)

How Can You Find the Survey?

There are several ways that you can find the survey.

From the Dashboard

Go to Survey button Go to your Canvas Dashboard. A small text box will open (see picture to the right).

Click the Go To Survey button, and you will go directly to the survey.

From the Calendar

You can also find a link called Short Survey in your Canvas Calendar.

The survey opens on a specific date.

Important

You must go to the exact OPENING date in the calendar to find the link to the survey. This is especially true on a cell phone, where you probably only see the calendar dates and not what is contained inside (such as the link to the survey!). If you don't see the link, then ask your teacher to find the correct date.

On a cell phone:

You can also find a student survey link added to the course menu of your Canvas course. Click on that link, and you will go directly to the survey.

From the Course To Do List (Computer)

You can also find a Short Survey link added to the course To Do List of your Canvas course homepage. Click on that link, and you will go directly to the survey.

How to Complete the Survey

Here are some instructions about how to complete the survey. The example used is the Noncredit ESL student survey, so the questions may be different.

If you receive any error messages from your browser while attempting to complete the survey, you will find some tutorials on changing your browser settings to successfully complete the survey near the bottom of the page.

Questions 1-4 Noncredit ESL Example

Rate your instructor. 5 is the highest score and means your instructor always does these items. 3 is sometimes, 1 is never, and there is also an I don't know option.

The instructor prepares for the class.
The instructor knows their subject.
The instructor presents the materials clearly.

Question 17 Noncredit ESL Example

Question 17 is optional, so you do not need to do it if you do not want to.
You can click the red Submit button after you finish Question 16 or 17.

Change Your Browser Settings If You Can't Complete the Survey

Surveys require your browser software to accept cookies. The cookie is used as a security measure to ensure only you can access information within the system. The cookie will be removed when you close your browser. Find the device/browser that you are using below to walk through how to enable third-party cookies.

After completing the survey, we recommend returning your browser to the security settings that you are comfortable using.

iPhone and iPad

iPhone and iPad default cookies settings are set to Allow from Websites I Visit, which prevents third-party cookies from being saved on your system. To enable third-party cookies:

On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings.
Select Safari.
Under Privacy & Security, disable Block All Cookies and Prevent cross-site tracking.
You may need to restart Safari for the new settings to take effect.

Firefox

By default, Firefox privacy settings are set to Remember history, which allows 3rd party cookies. If you changed the default settings to either Never remember history or Use custom settings for history, you will need to revert to enabling all cookies by following the steps below:

On Windows, click the Firefox menu icon, or button. Or on Mac, from the Firefox menu, click Preferences.
Click Content Blocking.
Click on the Privacy & Security.
In the Enhanced Tracking Protection section, select Standard.
Click OK. You may need to restart Firefox for the changes to take effect.

Edge

Microsoft Edge is set to not block cookies by default. If you changed the default settings, you will need to revert to enabling all cookies by following the below steps:

Click the Microsoft Edge settings icon (•••).
Select Settings.
Click Privacy and Security.
Under Cookies, click the drop-down menu and select Don't Block Cookies.

Chrome

Google Chrome allows 3rd party cookies by default. If you changed the default settings, you will need to revert to enabling all cookies by following the below steps:

On Windows, click the Chrome menu icon in the upper-right corner of the browser. Or on Mac, from the Chrome menu, click Preferences.
Select Settings.
Show or expand Advanced settings.
Go to Privacy and security >Cookies and other site data.
Enable Allow all cookies.

Safari

We don't recommend using Safari for Canvas, but if Safari is your only option, Safari's default cookies setting does not allow third-party cookies to be saved on your system. To enable third-party cookies:

From the Safari menu, click Preferences.
Select the Privacy tab from the top navigation.
Deselect Block all cookies and Website tracking: Prevent cross-site tracking.
You may need to restart Safari for the new settings to take effect
