How to Find and Join Class Meetings

Class Meetings

You can join CityZoom meetings through CityZoom in Canvas or the Canvas Calendar.

Join in CityZoom in Canvas

On Canvas, locate CityZoom on the course navigation menu.

Locate the meeting and click on Join to enter the meeting. The Join button will automatically open the Zoom application on your computer. Note that you might need to authorize the application to open or download the Zoom application.

Join via Canvas Calendar

Locate the Course Calendar on the Home page of our course or by clicking on Calendar in the global navigation menu.

Locate the meeting event on the course calendar. Click on the event and click on the link to join the Zoom meeting.

Office Hours

Office Hours

I will hold drop-in office hours via CityZoom. Check our homepage for exact days and times. I will enable a waiting room to make sure any private conversations are protected and admit you when previous students are done.

You can find the Office Hour CityZoom information in CityZoom in the course navigation menu. To learn how to join the CityZoom meeting, please view the information under the tab How to Find and Join Class Meetings. The process is the exact same for drop-in Office Hours!

Appointments

Appointments

You can book individual appointments with me using the Canvas Calendar. All appointments will be held via CityZoom.

Click on the Course Calendar.
Click on Find Appointments.
Locate our class.
Locate available appointments on the Calendar.
Click Reserve.

Note that the Zoom link for the appointment is located in the Appointment details and will not be emailed to you. You can return to the Course Calendar to locate the meeting details again.

View Cloud Recordings

You can view class recordings of past class sessions that were scheduled in CityZoom.

Click on CityZoom in the course navigation.
Click on Cloud Recordings to view a list of recordings from this class.
Alternatively, you can click on Previous Meetings to locate a specific recording or to check if the class was recorded.

Know Zoom Language

Screenshare refers to a participant or host sharing their screen such as showing a slides presentation or software.

Mute or mute button allows for participants to temporarily mute their microphone.

Chat is a text based chat with all participants in the Zoom session. You can also directly message participants if the host has allowed this feature.

Record allows the host (or in some cases, the participants) to record the Zoom session. Active speakers and users with their cameras turned on might be in the recording along with any screens being shared.

Raise hand allows you to raise your hand in the session and will prompt the host that you need attention.

Reactions give the host and participants the ability to clap or thumbs up during the Zoom session.

The Art of the Mute Button

When in doubt, stay muted in Zoom sessions. Muting yourself will ensure that any background noise is limited in the Zoom session.
If you want to temporarily unmute, you can hold down the space bar (if using the desktop Zoom client).
Try to be mindful of interrupting speakers during the session. Use the raise hand feature to alert the host of a question and/or use the chat box.

Some Zoom Norms

Zoom and other video sharing can sometimes feel strange when we're used to being in a face to face classroom together. The good news is, it can help bring us together during this unprecedented time of physical distancing. Sharing video of yourself from your home may be a new experience for many of us, so here are some tips:

Please keep your microphone on mute unless you are speaking.
If at all possible, do turn your video on. It really helps us when we can see each others' facial expressions and body language! If you can't, though, it OK.
Family members and pets happen, don't worry about it. If they are making a lot of noise, "mute" works.
Indicate your name when you Zoom, so I don't have to wonder who is joining us.
Read about privacy on Zoom. I would like us to use video to communicate with each other when possible. Let me know if there are times when video does not work for you, and we will find alternative ways to connect.
I will let you know when I am recording a portion of our Zoom meeting, and I will share recordings only with members of this class.
Do respect your classmates. This means:
- The personal stories we share stay in the Zoom room; the learning goes home with each of us.
- Don't make recordings or photos of Zoom meetings. People want to keep tabs on how their image and ideas are shared.
Remember that the host (me!) can access private chat records. Although others in the class won't see your private chats, I can.
Don't Zoom in the bathroom (duh, right?)
Even though you're at home, wear clothes as you do in public. Thanks!

How to Look and Sound Good on Zoom

Be mindful of what will be seen around and behind you.
Smile 🙂
Position the webcam in front of you, slightly higher than your eyes.
Do not have any light behind you pointing towards the webcam/computer. (No "backlighting"). Instead, try to sit where natural, indirect light from a nearby window illuminates your face.
If there is no natural light, use low-wattage lamps (not over 100 watts) that throw light on you, and partially on your background.
Wear what you would normally wear to school in person.
Speak a little slower than you normally would.
Enunciate clearly. If a word ends with a "T," pronounce the T.
Remember to breathe, relax, and smile!
