Castro Scavenger Hunt

 Purpose

The purpose of this scavenger hunt activity is to facilitate your exploration of San Francisco's Castro neighborhood in order to look more closely at LGBTQ+ history, culture, and people.

This assignment relates to SLO 2 - Describe effective strategies for building trust and relationships between the LGBTQ+ community and the justice system.

 Instructions

You can complete this activity by yourself or with a group of other students. If you work with one or more other students, remember that each individual student needs to submit a completed scavenger hunt in order to receive credit.  You can work together, share pictures, and help each other respond to each item on the scavenger hunt.

You will see a master list below of all of the scavenger hunt items to locate. The number next to each item corresponds to the question number where you will submit your evidence of finding the item. The easiest way to submit your evidence is with a picture that includes you in it. Each item includes a text box you can use to make notes or submit any text you wish. To submit a picture, click the "Insert" link in the text box editor and then upload the picture you wish to use.

All of the items included in this scavenger hunt can be found within the Castro neighborhood on one of the following streets.

Castro Street between Market and 19th Street.
18th Street between Noe St. and Eureka Street.
Market Street between Eureka Street and Noe Street.

You will see a series of bronze plaques on the sidewalk that are part of the "Rainbow Honor Walk." There are a couple of items on  the scavenger hunt list involving these plaques. Use the map of the honor walk to help you locate the plaques.

This activity is worth 20 points.  There are 23 items to locate, so find as many on the list as you can.  Some of the items offer a hint with a picture if you can't find the item location.  Download a copy of the Scavenger Hunt Master list.

 Scavenger Hunt Master List

1. Into the wind, the colors flow, visible down Market Street for all to see. Engraved are names, far below. 
2. 15,000 were lost, 15 granite pillars with 15 pink triangles remember what we should never forget.
3. An ordinary transparent looking place on a corner that is historic and a first in its day. You may not enter, if you’re not of age. But take a picture of the door.
4. Between two flags, this one flies Know what it means, I would advise. The heart may be red, and there may also be blue, But black is more prominent, and worn by the crew. 
5. Some people say “you can’t have your cake and eat it too” but in this neighborhood anything is possible!  Find a dessert with a rainbow you could eat.  
6. You’ve found door one, now you must find door two. There lies the second door, right in front of you. This holds the name, and history galore. PLEASE TAKE A PICTURE OF THE SECOND DOOR.  
7. It’s modern, brand new, and still providing care for those who suffer from the disease that took so many from this neighborhood.If it’s open go inside and learn.  Take a picture of something you discover.
8. You’ve had a long day, have you not? Go get a cookie, I hear they’re HOT. TAKE A PICTURE OF YOU EATING A COOKIE OR IN THE STORE.
9. Find the four businesses that are named with a sexy play on words.
10. Take a picture with Harvey Milk.
11. Find the square where Harvey Milk “remains” forever. An old square set within the new.
12. Find the painted rainbow with a plaque and the very first member of the military to come out. Where is the plaque hanging in his honor?
13. Find as many different variations of the rainbow flag as you can find and take a picture with each.
14. What’s playing today at the theater bearing the name of the neighborhood?
15. Find all of the places where you can buy pizza by the slice.
16. Look near the top of the hill to the south for the gayest collection of Barbie dolls in the Castro and take a picture.
17. Find the bronze plaque honoring Harry Hay. What does it say?
18. Find the bronze plaque honoring Christine Jorgensen. What does it say?
19. Find a bronze plaque honoring a civil rights leader. What is the name on the plaque and what does it say?
20. Locate the watering hole where daddies meet their boys. Here’s a hint, it’s halfway between zero and 880 near the center of the City’s gayest block.
21. Find the place honoring the San Francisco Police Special who cared for the neighborhood.Describe the place, the plaque, and the name of this special woman.
22. Visit the archives of local history and find an artifact related to something you learned about in class.Take a picture of it (no flash) and explain how what you found connects.
23. Bookstores are rare and gay ones even more rare. Find the most “fabulous” bookstore in the neighborhood. Go in and take a picture with something interesting.
