Class Syllabus

A syllabus is a document students usually get the first day of class. It lets me show you important information about our class. You may want to print out the syllabus or you may be using a screen reader. You can also get a Word document of the syllabus.

A syllabus has many sections. There is a lot of information, but you need to read each section.

Class Description

Low intermediate 6 language skills. Participation in discussions on career, social, and academic topics. Comprehension of adapted and some authentic narrative and informational texts. Development of clearly organized paragraphs. Full Course Outline

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

1. Identify main ideas and key details in a range of adapted spoken English texts on familiar and some unfamiliar topics.
2. Communicate orally in discussions, using a range of low-intermediate English language structures and forms.
3. Identify main ideas and key details in a range of adapted written English texts on familiar and some unfamiliar topics.
4. Write short, organized paragraphs with relevant ideas and details, using a range of low-intermediate English language structures and forms.
5. Work effectively in a diverse cultural environment at a low intermediate English level.

Class Meetings

Zoom classes will meet on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 8:20 to 10:00 AM. On Mondays and Fridays, students will be working independently using Canvas.

Course Website

Students will use the Canvas Learning Management system [for assignment instructions, submitting assignments, viewing classmates' work, sharing resources, and viewing grades]. I can help with the course material and with some Canvas issues. But, if you need help uploading an assignment or with the mechanics of Canvas, please use the Student Canvas Guides or live support available through Canvas Chat.

This class does have a textbook. It’s Ventures 3 (3rd edition), and it costs $35.70 (That’s only 44 cents a day!). To buy the book with a discount, click Cambridge CCSF Store Front. If you really can’t afford the book, we will work something out.

Communication Plan

I will answer your questions or email within 48 hours during the work week (Monday-Friday) or I will tell you if it will take longer..
I will look at the assignments you submit and give you comments and corrections when needed. I will comment on assignments within 48 hours of the due date. If I need more time, I will put it in an announcement.
I will set up a private Zoom meeting with you if you need more instruction than I have given in Zoom Class or in Canvas. You just need to send me an email and ask for a private Zoom meeting.

Instructor Announcements

The instructor will post announcements on the “Instructor Announcements” page in Canvas throughout the semester. Canvas notifies students according to their preferred Notification Preferences as soon as the instructor creates an Announcement.

Feedback (Comments on Your Assignments)

For auto-graded assignments, like quizzes, you will get immediate feedback from Canvas. However, Linda will double-check the score because sometimes Canvas grades answers incorrectly. For assignments that require the teacher to grade, the teacher will give feedback within one week from the due date. Often times, it will be sooner than that. Thanks for your patience. You will receive regular and detailed feedback, comments, and suggestions that will help you develop your skills, and you will also receive feedback from classmates in Discussions.

You can RE-SUBMIT your work after reading the teacher's feedback.

After the teacher has given you feedback, you will see a notice on the right side of the Homepage.

Weekly Discussions

We will have weekly Discussion to give your a chance to think about what you learned during the week and so that you can communicate with your classmates in writing. Each discussion includes clear criteria for your required post and replies, including due dates and a grading rubric. Linda will also be active in the Discussions by reading all your posts and responding to at least several students or more each week to be part of our classes community and to help the conversations to continue.

We will be using CityZoom for our Zoom classes. the classes will be recorded. If you cannot come to a Zoom class, you can watch the recording using the Cloud Recordings tab in CityZoom.

Required Software

You can use a desktop, laptop, tablet, or cellphone for this class. You should download the Canvas App if you want to use Canvas on your cellphone.

No Class: September 4 (Labor Day), October 9 (Flex Day), November 10 (Veterans Day), November 23 and 24 (Thanksgiving)

Dropping the Class

If you need to stop taking the class, please let me know. Another student may be waiting to join. I know that you have busy lives with family, school, and work. It's ok to stop taking class. It's very helpful if you tell me and not just disappear like a ghost.

Attendance

We will meet in CityZoom on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 8:20 AM to 10:00 AM. I know you all have very busy lives. Please come to class when you can. If you miss a Zoom class, you can watch it in Cloud Recordings in CityZoom. The class materials are available in the week's module. Not being able to come to the Zoom class does not mean that you do not have to do the assignments or quizzes.

If you are going to come to Zoom class late or leave Zoom class early regularly, please let the teacher know.

Academic Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

If you need classroom or testing accommodations because of a disability, have emergency medical information to share with me, or need special arrangements if the building needs to be evacuated, please make an appointment with me as soon as possible. My office hours are by appointment either on the Ocean Campus (9-4 p.m., Monday through Friday) or by Zoom video-conferencing.

Standards of Conduct

Students who register in CCSF classes must abide by the CCSF Student Code of Conduct. Violation of the code is basis for referral to the Student Conduct Coordinator or dismissal from class or the College. See the Office of Student Affairs.

Student Expectations

You will try to attend Zoom classes on a regular basis.
You will submit assignments when you can. Late assignments are ok, but I will not take ALL the assignments the last week of school.
You will let the teacher know when you are having trouble understanding the class material. I want to make sure everyone is understanding and can give you extra help.
You will let the teacher know if you are going to travel and will be away for several weeks.
You will let the teacher know if you have to stop taking the class.
You will do your own and your best work.

Instructor Expectations

I will respond to your email or message within 48 hours during the week unless I inform you otherwise.
I will treat you and your ideas with respect.
I will grade your course assignments within a week. (If you have posted late work, it may take longer.)
You will see your grades in the Canvas Gradebook.
I will work hard to make this a great class.
