Math 80 Probability and Statistics

Course Information

Welcome to Probability and Statistics! We will be exploring techniques for the collect and production of data, analyzing data, concepts of probability and lastly methods of inference in which we make conclusions and predictions about a population at large based on the data we have observed.

Attendance and Late or Missing Work Policies

No Show or No Attendance

Students who fail to attend two of the first three in-person class sessions and/or do not complete the Module 0-Orientation learning activities after the second week will be dropped from the class. I will assume that you have no intention of participating or taking the class so please contact me via one of the methods above if you are having trouble with completing the first set of learning activities.

Poor Attendance

Online- If you do not complete 2 weeks worth of activities in a row, I will assume you have decided to discontinue the course and you will be subject to being dropped. Please be sure to contact me if you are having any difficulties and/or challenges with keeping up with the schedule of materials.

Hybrid-If you need to miss more than one in-person class in a row, you should contact me to avoid being dropped from the class. This is a hybrid course so there is still an expectation for you to attend regularly and participate in class with your classmates as well as take some of the timed assessments.

Late Work Policy

If you are absent or late please communicate with others and me. There are times where even I myself may be absent, late or need to adjust our schedule of material. In the day and age of technology there are many issues with our devices and internet service providers. You are responsible for submitting your work by submission deadlines typically at 10pm PST but if you are having troubles please message me. If you miss a practice assignment submission you must contact me before solutions are posted which are typically 8am the day after it is due for it to be considered to be graded for credit. The practices and/or any make-up exams must be completed before any solutions are posted or discussed. I do not allow Make-Up exams unless there is prior notice and compelling reasons. I encourage you to form reliable bonds with colleagues and double check Canvas to be sure you are not missing any notes, objectives, announcements or assignment deadlines.

Student Learning Outcomes

Critique studies based on sample statistics in order to make informed judgments on the reliability of the statistical presentation or argument.
Analyze raw data with the help of technology where appropriate.
Evaluate and interpret data distributions through the study of sampling distributions and probability theory.
Apply appropriate statistical models to estimate population parameters and determine the validity of hypotheses.
