Course Information

This is an online course presented in a weekly module format that runs Monday through Sunday. Because we do not meet in person, communication via the discussion boards is an essential part of this course. This course will also include assignments, activities, discussions, quizzes, and a final project.

Course Description

Reference, communication, teamwork, resources, and technology competency for library support staff working in special libraries and information centers. Surveys need and use of specialized information for personal, corporate, or academic use from print and online resources in a variety of special libraries. Types of special libraries covered in this course will vary by semester.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

- Discover and evaluate information resources and technologies specific to user needs in special libraries.
- Distinguish between various types of special libraries, their functions, collections, and unique clientele.
- Apply knowledge of subject headings or specific terminology for effective catalog and database searching of special library topics.
- Formulate reference responses specific to user needs in special libraries.

Important Dates

This course begins on Monday, January 27, and runs for 16 weeks. There are no mandatory meetings for this course or required textbooks. It is completely online and asynchronous (i.e., not live) in Canvas.
