Text Instructions for Essay 1: Summary/Response

Purpose

This essay is the major writing assignment to complete Project 1. The purpose is threefold:

to review and practice summarizing an article
to practice formulating a response to a text-based question
to practice revision and editing skills

Instructions

In order to complete all objectives for Project 1, please follow the general outline below. This will result in a five-paragraph essay, which is not the only kind! But it's a useful size for lots of shorter college assignments. We'll write longer essays for Projects 2 and 3. Keep in mind as you work that a body paragraph should be at least 5 sentences, and usually 7 to 9 is more typical. Here is the outline to guide you:

Open this essay with an introduction of the article " The Trait That 'Super Friends' Have in Common." Include the author's name and the full title of the article. Include a couple more sentences that briefly summarize the gist of the article. Then close with a thesis statement that reveals the degree to which you accept Marisa Franco's ideas (full-fledged disagreement is fine too).
Next, use the paragraph you worked on for Peer Workshop as the first body paragraph of Essay 1. In this paragraph, you should give a more detailed summary of the article and include at least one direct quotation that is "framed" as you practiced in the frame a quote exercise. (Revise and edit based on comments from the peer workshop.)
In the second body paragraph, respond to Franco's claim. To what degree do you find her ideas persuasive? What leads you to your position?
In the third body paragraph, describe a friend you know or an experience you've had with a friend that helps support your view.
Finally, close with a brief conclusion of two or three sentences that leaves your reader with something about the topic to consider.

Due date

Turn in Essay 1 by 11:59 PM on the due date to protect your points. I will accept essay submissions until the end of the semester, but submitting an essay late will result in 10 points taken off the score. Whether the essay is one day late or three weeks late, the point penalty is the same. Please do not ask for an adjustment as I need to apply the same rules to all students. You'll find the submission link in Module 3.
