Hector & Elizabeth Activity
Directions: For each item below decide what's going on in Hector & Elizabeth's relationship: What inference can you draw? After you've responded to each item below, you'll be asked to decide which version has Hector & Elizabeth headed to divorce court.
We've started the first two items below, so you'll have a model of how to respond to the other items.
Item #1: Hector wanted to go out to dinner. Elizabeth wanted to sleep.
Explanation: These independent clauses are punctuated as 2 separate sentences. These are 2 separate ideas, so there's not necessarily any relationship between Hector & Elizabeth.
Item #2: Hector wanted to go out to dinner, and Elizabeth wanted to sleep.
If you join the two sentences with one of the FANBOYS, you're saying there's a relationship between the two sentences, and therefore, between Hector & Elizabeth. If we join the sentences with "and" what are we saying about their relationship? (You may want to refer back to the FANBOYS Logical Relationships Chart as you complete this activity.)
Explanation: "And" signals the addition of similar things. The writer is highlighting what's similar about them--they both have wants. That's just a regular part of any relationship, so using "and" means their relationship is just the usual.
