Topic 1 Overview

Hi! Welcome to topic number 1: Understanding the Latino Diaspora.

In this topic you will begin to examine the way that the Hispanic and Latino labels were created in the United States. The purposes that it serves socially, politically and culturally; and the tensions that exists within the community over the meaning of the hispanic and Latino labels. In addition, you will explore the different reasons that explain the presence of Latinos in the United States.

After successfully completing this topic you will be able to:

Compare and contrast the differences and similarities of the Latino and Hispanic labels.
Analyze the racial and ethnic diversity that exists within the Latino/Hispanic label
Explain the different reasons that led to the presence of Latinos and Latinas in the United States
