Overview - Coding and Classification Systems

In this module, we are going to explore the preparation for and the duties of a coding professional. While the assignment of codes still remains a viable task in the HIM professional's toolbox, how we code and the duties of professional coders have changed. The advent of the electronic record, remote work, the computer assisted coding programs and more complex regulations have open many new possibilities for professional coders.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

Describe the day-to-day activities of a production coder
Compare the typical day for a production coder with that of a coding auditor
Identify emerging careers for coders
Evaluate the relationship between code assignment and revenue cycle
Assess your own career in regard to what you will hear from professional coders
Reframe what you have learned in the classroom to a "real-world" experience
