Spring 2021 Instructional Calendar
Important Dates
- Day Class Begins: 2/1/21
- Day Class Ends: 5/26/21
- Last Day to Drop with a 'W' symbol: 4/22/21
- Final Exam Date: 5/26/21
Dropping the Class
This course covers 16 weeks. Your weekly online attendance is based on 1) your weekly attendance on CityZoom as described below under Attendance, and 2) your successful completion of the weekly assignments. Each week is worth a maximum of 5.3 hours with a maximum total of 85 hours for the semester. I adjust the hours for students who add the class after the first remote meeting.
Students who fail to log in within a week of registration will be dropped as No Shows. Students who do not participate in the online learning activities by the end of the second week will be dropped from the class. It is strongly advised that if you need to miss more than one work/activity deadline in a row that you contact me to avoid being dropped from the class.
If your attendance falls below 80%, I reserve the right to drop you from the course without further notice or explanation. You cannot assume I will drop you, however. If you choose to drop or withdraw from the class, it is your responsibility to do so through your Ram Portal or Noncredit Admission.
The last day I will do an instructor-mediated withdrawal is 4/22/21. If you continue the class after that date but do not pass, you will receive an F.
Pass‐NoPass (P/NP)
This course is Letter Grade Only and does not have a P/NP option.
Attendance
When you promptly log into your class meeting and participate in the class activities through the full class time as well as completing the assigned work for that meeting (in or out of class), you receive 2.66 hours. I will open the meetings ten minutes before the class starts. You will be placed into the Zoom Waiting Room, and then I will move you into the class space. If you log in late, you might have to wait a few minutes to be allowed into the class depending on what we are doing.
Please note that while hours count under Participation toward your final course grade, hours do not affect your grade on any particular assignment, quiz, or test. Also note that your remote meeting hours are calculated from the day you are added to the course even if you add late and must do catch-up assignments.
Your hours are entered into Canvas Attendance+ so the college can track your attendance.
Late Policy
All assignments are due at the stated time and date, PST. A late submission will receive a 25% penalty. Submissions more than one week late will not be accepted without prior arrangement. Late work will not be graded without prior permission from me.
Grading
Methods of Evaluation
Each week you will complete graded and ungraded assignments. All of these assignments can be completed during and after reading the content pages in the modules. Please note that modules can cover one or more weeks depending on the amount of material they contain.
Each module will include a worksheet packet with problem sets associated with the reading and other content. The packets will be available as pdf files for you to download and work by hand. Please note that I want them worked by hand in order to verify you have done the work yourself. The required math also is best worked by hand as the math editor is difficult to use.
The worksheets can be uploaded using a scanner or a scanning app. Grading is according to the worksheet assignment rubric given on the assignment page.
The class includes individual and small group work, full-class discussions, and one-on-one meetings with me. Some of those activities will be formally assessed (graded); others will not. I will notify you of any grading at the time the activities occur.
Quizzes and Exams
Quizzes may be taken three times, with the highest score being kept. The module exams may be taken two times, with the highest score being kept. The cumulative midterm and final exams may be taken only once and once started, must be completed in 2.5 hours.
All the quizzes and exams are open book, open notes. Please do not discuss quizzes and exams with anyone else. Please do not use extracurricular materials or search for answers on the Internet while taking quizzes and exams. The allowed material comes from the reading, lectures, supplemental class materials, and class activities. If any exam is missed, a zero will be recorded as the score. It is your responsibility to take the quizzes and exams by the due dates.
Grading Policy
Visit Grades in Canvas to keep track of your grades. Grades and comments are posted in the grade book.
How do I view my grades, teacher comments, and an assignment rubric as a student?
Final Grades will be assigned as an average of your assignments, participation, and tests.
