  • I will respond to all course email within 24-48 hours Monday-Friday, exclusive of school holidays. Once the course begins, I prefer to get messages through the Canvas "Inbox". 

 

Communication Plan

  • I will respond to your messages within 24-48 hours during the work week (Monday-Friday) excluding holidays or if you are notified otherwise.
  • Your work will be reviewed and I will comment on it within 5 days of the due date unless you are informed otherwise. Please note that you will receive private comments on your discussion posts, your course journal entries, and your project and final exams. Your weekly quizzes also contain feedback for your own self-assessment. 
  • Office hours are by appointment.

 

Building Community

The heart of this class is the discussion forum. Each week you and your classmates will analyze and discuss the issues that come up in the material this week. My hope is that we all learn from each other, from our varied experiences, from our different world views. I look forward to participating in discussions with you.

The instructor will post announcements on the “Instructor Announcements” page in Canvas throughout the semester. Canvas notifies students according to their preferred Notification Preferences as soon as the instructor creates an Announcement.

  Course Description

 

A high school history survey course of the eras between the discovery and exploration of the Americas to the Antebellum Era of the United States. Fulfills Social Science Core high school credits.

 

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Summarize the causes, effects, and significance of major developments in US history between 1620 and 1860.
  2. Examine primary and secondary sources to be able to support a historical claim.
  3. Evaluate the impact of social and cultural trends on United States history.
  4. Use methods of inquiry to synthesize historical evidence and interpretations.

Important Dates

  • Course start date: June 8, 2022
  • No Show Drop Date: June 14, 2022 (if you have not signed into Canvas to begin work by this date you will be dropped)
  • School Holiday: June 20, 2022 
  • Midterm Report: June 27, 2002 (If you have a D or lower you are in jeopardy of being dropped)
  • School Holiday: July 4, 2022
  • Final Drop Date: July 8, 2022 (Students not passing will be dropped)
  • Class Ends: July 14, 2022

 

Attendance

Students are expected to be present the entire class period. A student that is tardy for more than one hour will be marked absent.

If you need to miss class, contact me ASAP via the Canvas Inbox to make arrangements.

Dropping the Class

Students that have not attended class by June 14, 2022 will be dropped. 

If a student has more than 4 absences, they will be dropped from the class and will not earn the credits for the course.

Late Policy

  • Synchronous assignments should be completed during class time.
  • All asynchronous (homework) assignments are due at 11:59 p.m. PST on the due date. 

However, I know that you are all juggling a lot of different things in your life, so if work is late please let me know as soon as possible. 

  • I will accept late work with no penalty. 
  • Work that is turned in late will be corrected at my discretion, although usually within two weeks.n

Methods of Evaluation

Each week you will complete assignments including but not limited to the following:

  • Synchronous activities (in class)
  • Asynchronous activities/homework (outside of class)
  • Discussions/Responses

Tests

You will have a Unit Test after each unit. Tests will be short answer responses, sometimes multiple choice. The material comes from the reading/video assignments, and supplemental materials. If a test is missed, a zero will be recorded as the score. It is your responsibility to reach out to schedule a time to take the test if missed.

You will succeed in this course if you meet the following expectations:

  • Complete the assigned activities. Please let me know as soon as you can concerning difficulties that you may have in getting assignments in on time. 
  • Complete the discussion posts and replies within the given window of time. Our discussions are much more vibrant when we all participate!
  • Complete the unit tests, assignments, and the final exam on time.
  • Think critically about the weekly topics. Is something surprising? Is it new to you? How does it contrast with what you know about XYZ or how does it compare to ABC? 
  • Do your own and your best work.
