Communication Plan

  • I will respond to your messages within 48 hours during the work week (Monday-Friday), excluding holidays, or if you are notified otherwise.
  • I will participate in the weekly discussions but will not respond to each individual student. You will receive private comments on your discussion posts.
  • If you are more than 15 minutes late to our weekly zoom sessions,  you will not receive credit for that session.
  • Office hours are: By appointment. We can meet via Zoom video conferencing. Please send me an email if you would like to meet one-on-one through Zoom.

Building Community

The most important part of this class is to build a community of parents committed to caring for their children. Participating with your classmates through the zoom sessions helps us develop that sense of community and feeling of belonging.  We learn from each other, from our varied experiences, and from our different perspectives. You will ‘hear’ me say often, “There is wisdom in the room.”

  Course Description

Study of the role of parents/guardians in the healthy development of children from birth through adolescence. Emphasis on building positive relationships with children in the areas of bonding, attachment, self esteem, family dynamics, age-appropriate expectations and the importance of positive communications. Fulfills court-mandated parent education requirements.

Prerequisites/corequisites/advisories

ESL 182 or ENGL 88 or placement in ESL 184 or readiness for college-level English.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe the development of children from birth to 18 years old, including factors that impact developmental expectations.
  2. Analyze normative behavior of children from birth to 18 years and parent/guardian responses to common challenges, including the impact of stress and trauma on the brain development of the child and the effects on the family unit
  3. Explain the importance of ongoing communication between parents/guardians and child care staff, teachers, and health care professionals and utilize communication strategies for assessing the needs of the child. 
  4. Identify the value of attachment, bonding, setting limits, and utilizing positive guidance strategies.

Students will use the Canvas Learning Management system [for assignment instructions, submitting assignments, viewing classmates' work, sharing resources, and viewing grades].  I can help with the course material and with some Canvas issues. But, if you need help uploading an assignment or with the mechanics of Canvas, Canvas help is the number to call.

Important Dates

  • Day Class Begins: August 22, 2022 
  • Day Class Ends: December 12, 2022.
  • Class Holidays (No Class):  9/3-9/5, 10/10, 11/11, and 11/24-11/27.

Attendance

This class and the topics covered are approved by the Department of Human Services Family and Children’s Services for court ordered, reunification, and/or child protective services referred clients.

 

Certificate of Completion is presented based upon:

  • Class attendance and involvement.
  • Maximum Missed Classes Allowed – Three (3)

    ***Late Arrivals to class exceeding 15 minutes will result in an absence***

    Students are responsible for monitoring their own attendance and will be notified immediately by the instructor if they exceed the maximum # of absences.  In addition, notification will be sent to Department of Human Services, if necessary.

  • Completion of all reading (handouts) assignments

  • Participation in Pre/Post Questionnaire, class activities, and homework assignments.

  Grading

This is a non-credit class. There are no grades.
