Course Description

Overview of Wordpress and social media technologies to develop websites and/or use together with existing websites. Covers Web 2.0 and 3.0 technologies such as blogs, sites, social media, wikis, video and photo sharing and other tools how to integrate those technologies together.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

    • Summarize Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 technologies and how they are integrated with blogs and/or websites.
    • Compare how data sharing is affected by browser-based operating systems and web-based applications.
    • Build a blog and/or website using development tools.
    • Manage and integrate web content using different Web 2.0 and 3.0 technologies.
    • Define the different monetization models to be used with web 2.0 or 3.0 technologies.

Monday January 30 -  Tuesday May 25
A new topic will be opened every Wednesday by 12 noon

Prerequisite

No prerequisite course is required, but this course expects a basic computer literacy equivalent to CNIT 100 (access e-mail, access and navigate the internet, download and install applications, save/rename/delete files). If you have questions or concerns about this, please let me know. Some knowledge about the internet, the use of email, etc. is helpful.

I will respond to all course email promptly, usually within 72 hours Monday-Friday, exclusive of school holidays.

Communication with professor

The Discussion Forum will be the preferred method for communication. You can also use the email in this course (Inbox icon on the left side - gray area). If you need to use the external email, you should write CNIT-129 in the subject line in order to not go to the Spam folder. I also receive a large number of emails. Your email is important to me. I want to make sure I do not miss it.

You have an e-mail account issued by City College that ends in @mail.ccsf.edu. This is where all the important information from the school goes. You will find more information about the CCSF email account in your Web4 account.

I respond to emails and discussions forums within 72 hours EXCEPT for Friday afternoon through Monday morning. I have a young family, and generally do not open my computer during that time.

 

Course Requirements

  • Online discussions and regular participation is required
    This is not a self-paced course. Activities and assignments are to be completed on a weekly basis. Directions for assignments and activities will be provided each week. There will be 8 points for participation that will be given based on submitting assignments on time and participating in the forums (posts in the forum made when the following topic is opened WILL NOT COUNT towards the participation points)
  • Weekly Homework Assignments:
    Weekly homework assignment is required; there might be some extra-credit assignments.
  • Final Project: A final project is required.

Required Reading

There will be required reading and video watching on a weekly basis. The materials are free and will be given as needed.

 

Computer and Equipment Requirement

  1. Regular, reliable computer and Internet access is a requirement for this course
  2. Webcam of your choosing
  3. Microphone with or without headset

 

Instructor Announcements and Q&A Discussion Forum 

The professor will post announcements on the “Instructor Announcements” page in Canvas throughout the semester. Canvas notifies students according to their Notification Preferences.  A “Discussion Forum” is also available on Canvas to ask for assistance from your classmates.

Notification Preferences

Canvas includes a set of default notification preferences you can receive for courses in which you have enrolled. Notifications are sent to Canvas contact methods, as specified in your account. However, you can change the default settings by setting your own notification preferences. Take a few minutes to set it how you would like to see the new class information. You can try different methods and decide which one fits better fits your schedule.

 

Attendance and Dropping

Attendance in this online class means:

  • Logging in regularly every week
  • Actively participating in the discussions
  • Turning in homework assignments on time
  • Taking quizzes and exams

You need to make sure that you participate every week by reading the material, submitting assignments, and participating in the discussion forums.

Students who do not log-in to the class after the second week will be dropped. It is strongly advised that if you need to miss more than one class or assignment deadline in a row that you contact me to avoid being dropped from the class.

Dropping

    • In general, it is the student’s responsibility to drop or withdraw from the class. Make sure to pay attention to the college deadlines regarding drops
    • I reserve the right to drop any student who has not participated in the course for two or more consecutive weeks

  • Class Begins: January 30, 2023
  • Class Ends: May 25, 2023
  • SHORT TERMS CLASSES at CCSF have different add/drop dates. Please pay attention to these when you enroll in a Sec 9XX course. 
  • February 8
    • Last day to drop this SHORT-TERM credit course work in order to qualify for a refund. Students are liable for all fees for full-term courses dropped after this date.
  • February 16
    • Last day to add
    • Last day to drop without a W
  • April 27
    • Last day to process Student or Instructor initiated Withdrawals and Change Sections for the same department
    • Last Day to select P/NP
  • Final Exam Date: Exam will be available online in Canvas, May 20, 2023

Grading

Homework Assignments - 180 points total
Final Project - 50 points
Introduce Yourself Forum - 20 points
Online Participation - 50 points
TOTAL POSSIBLE POINTS = 300 points

Late Assignments: Late assignments can be submitted but will suffer a deduction of 10% PER WEEK that it is late.

All assignments are due on the due date listed on the assignment.

Deadlines are important in any work or life situation, and it is the same with this class. There is no delivery of assignment via email after the last due date set in the schedule.

 

Letter Grades

In CNIT 129, you earn a letter grade (unless you select P/NP grading). From the above percentage, mid-term and final letter grades are determined as follows:
90 - 100% of TOTAL POINTS = A
80 - 89% of TOTAL POINTS = B
70 - 79% of TOTAL POINTS = C
60 - 69% of TOTAL POINTS = D
Less than 59% of TOTAL POINTS = F
