Dropping the Class
(Really important information to avoid being dropped from the course)
- Plan to succeed by paying special attention and reading this material very carefully. Once a student has been dropped, reinstatement is not an option. I usually email non participating students in advance to remind them of the drop policy in this course.
- While the drop policy applies to all students, do pay special attention to the items listed below if you are a student who:
- Needs one last class to graduate, transfer or complete a certificate/degree
- Needs a minimum number of units – many times, international students, veterans or students receiving financial aid.
- You will be dropped from the course:
- If you are registered in the course but have not logged in through Canvas seven (7) days from the start date of class.
- If you miss the first two modules of homework assignments 14 days from the start date of the course.
- If you miss either of the exams.
- If you miss two of the weekly homework assignments anytime throughout the course.
- Can I drop myself? Of course! Commencing with the first day of instruction, you may drop or withdraw through your myRAM Portal. If you have registered for the course but no longer attend it or have never attended it, you can drop or withdraw from the class. You are always welcome back to the course in a subsequent semester.
- If you’re considering dropping the course on your own, please check the dates to drop on or before the deadline to avoid a permanent notation on your record.
- If you’re just not sure whether to drop the course, consider talking to a counselor (Links to an external site.) or reading an article entitled “Should I drop a College Class?”
Pass‐No Pass (P/NP)
You may take this class P/NP. You must decide before the deadline and add the option online with College Scheduler or file the P/NP form with Admissions and Records. With a grade of C or better, you will get P.
Attendance
Students who fail to log in to the online class after the first week will be dropped from the class.
If you need to miss more than two weekly homework assignments, you will be dropped from the course.
Late Policy
If you login regularly and often at the start of each week, you have a better chance of assessing the workload based upon your commitments. Login hours and activity are provided in reports to the instructor. Policies about late work protect and honor students who manage their time to meet scheduled deadlines. Please carefully read the late work policy for this course:
- Because there is no late work accepted and no extensions will be granted, time management and organization are important. All work in this course (weekly homework, exams and write-ups ) are to be submitted online at the specified date and time deadline.
- After a deadline is reached, submissions are no longer allowed through the Canvas system. It’s a good idea to block out time in your schedule to do the work each week and to start all assignments early, as technical hiccups do occur from time to time and they can take time and patience to resolve.
- Students are juggling many responsibilities, and it is easy to forget a deadline. There are reminders on Canvas, so consider making it a practice to login frequently. There’s a “To Do” and “Coming up” list in the lower right hand of the Canvas page, and you may also want to click on the calendar icon to see due dates and times in a calendar format.
Grading
Methods of Evaluation (Kindly remember that there is no extra credit in this course).
Weekly Homework ~ 25% of your total grade
You will complete weekly graded homework valued at 25% of your total grade. The weekly quizzes (there are about 15 of them), will be due at 11 PM on Sundays. They are posted on Canvas, and due at the same time each week. I recommend that you check Canvas daily as a reminder. The lowest homework score will be dropped, which means the top 14 scores will be averaged and calculated as 20% of your total grade.
There is a homework each week and grading is based on completion rather than proficiency. The weekly assignment can be completed after reading the textbook assignments and the summaries in the content modules. The weekly homework assignments represent 25% of your total grade.
Exams ~ 50% of your total grade (each exam is valued at 25% of your total grade)
There will be two (2) exams:
Exam #1: 25% of your total grade
Exam #2: 25% of your total grade
The material comes from the textbook, class lectures (recorded and you listen as your own time and leisure if you wish), and supplemental materials.
A study guide will be posted two weeks before each exam.
Supervisor/Manager Interview ~ 25% of your grade:
25% of your total grade
Grading Policy
Visit the “Grades” in Canvas to keep track of your grades. Assessments are graded weekly and written assignments are graded with comments posted on the online Canvas gradebook.
How do I view my grades, teacher comments, and an assignment rubric as a student?
Please note that there is no extra credit in this course.
Grades will be assigned as follows:
Letter Grade | Percent |
---|---|
A |
>=90% |
B |
>=80% |
C |
>=70% |
D |
>=60% |
F or FW |
<60% |
If taking Pass/No Pass, you need at least 70% of the total class points and complete the midterm exam and the final exam to pass the class.
An “F” grade indicates that a student attended, participated, and completed the course but failed to master the course curriculum.
An “FW” grade indicates the student stopped attending a course after the “last day to withdraw” deadline and subsequently did not submit any work or participate in any exams. Please check with your counselor and financial aid advisor for possible implications of the FW grade on residency and financial aid status.
Academic Accommodations for Students with Disabilities
If you need classroom or testing accommodations because of a disability, have emergency medical information to share with me, or need special arrangements if the building needs to be evacuated, please make an appointment with me as soon as possible. My office hours are by appointment either on the Ocean Campus (9-4 p.m., Monday through Friday) or by Zoom video-conferencing.
Students seeking disability-related accommodations are encouraged to register with Disabled Students Programs and Services located in Room 323 of the Rosenberg Library (415) 452-5481. Please see the DSPS website for more information and alternate locations.
Standards of Conduct
Students who register in CCSF classes must abide by the CCSF Student Code of Conduct. Violation of the code is the basis for referral to the Student Conduct Coordinator or dismissal from class or the College. See the Office of Student Affairs.
Kindly refrain from sending any email correspondence when you're frustrated, angry or at wits end.
Collaborating on or copying of tests or homework in whole or in part will be considered an act of academic dishonesty and result in a grade of 0 for that test or assignment. I encourage students to share information and ideas, but not their work. See these links on Plagiarism:

Adding the Class Before the Start Date
- Use Web4 to enroll in the class if space is available.
- If no space is available, you can use Web4 to add yourself to a waitlist.
- If space becomes available before the semester, you will be notified via email and provided an add code.
- If you are on the waitlist and no space becomes available, you will need to use the next set of steps.
Adding the Class After the Start Date
- CCSF has removed add codes, so you must use the Class Request option on the class schedule using the CRN to request an add.
- Requests are not guaranteed, but I will always add students whenever possible.
- I always prioritize the waitlist first and then the request list. I will email students on the waitlist to disclose the order and request that they add through Web4.
Student Expectations
You will succeed in this course if you meet the following expectations:
- Complete all assignments by their due date.
- Complete the discussion posts and replies within the given window of time. Our discussions are much more vibrant when we all participate!
- Complete and submit the weekly homework/quizzes, three exams, and the virtual stock market project and write-up on time.
- Think critically about the weekly topics. Is something surprising? Is it new to you? How does it contrast with what you know about business or economics, or how does it compare to or intersect with politics and technology?
- Be your authentic self and submit your own original and best work.
Instructor Expectations
Here is what you can expect of me:
- I will respond to your email or message within 24 hours during the week unless I inform you otherwise.
- I will treat you and your ideas with respect.
- Your weekly course assignments will be graded instantly (automated).
- Grades on the virtual stock market project and write-up will be completed within two weeks.
- You will see your grades in the Canvas Gradebook.
- I will diligently and with great attention to detail make this a meaningful course and worthy of your time.
