Module 6.1 Overview: Learning

Overview

In this module, the main goal is to explore learning, which is a lot for one week but we are going to take a crack at it! We spent some time earlier in the semester on the Yerkes-Dodson Law, which lays at the intersection of consciousness and learning, and then we did some work around focus and study skills, but now we are going to dive deeper, and touch on some useful concepts that will serve you throughout your lifetime.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

Describe how classical conditioning works.
Describe stimulus generalization and stimulus discrimination.
Explain how classical conditioning is involved in taste aversion and phobias.
Describe how operant conditioning works.
Compare and contrast the types of reinforcement and punishment.
Compare and contrast the schedules of reinforcement.
Explain the process of shaping.
Describe latent learning and learned helplessness.
Discuss how observational learning works.
Explain how we learn aggressive behavior through observation.

To meet the objectives of this module, you will complete the following activities and assessments:

Review the lectures, videos, and other materials in the module.
Complete the chapter reading.
Complete the assignment, "Learning Styles and Reinforcement and Punishment."
Complete the Module Quiz on the week's chapter.

Schedule

You should expect to spend at about 7 - 10 hours to complete all the learning activities of each module. Check the weekly announcement for details of what is due, when.
