Module 12.1 Overview: Methods of therapy AND social psychology

Overview

In this module, you will learn about social psychology and methods of therapy (two chapters!), and in your assignment you will listen to some sessions and reflect on what you've heard.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

Describe the two broad categories of therapy.
Discuss the three primary mental health professions that provide therapy.
Compare and contrast psychodynamic, behavior, cognitive, and humanistic therapies.
Describe child therapy, group therapy, and family/couples therapy.
Discuss the kinds of medication that are helpful in treating psychological disorders.
Explain when electroconvulsive therapy, psychosurgery, and deep brain stimulation would be performed to treat psychological disorders.
Describe what emotions are made of and what functions they serve.
Compare and contrast the three theories of emotion.
Describe which brain regions control emotions.
Explain the causes of stress.
Describe the general adaptation syndrome.
Discuss potential gender differences in the stress response.
Describe how cognitive appraisal affects stress.
Explain how situational and personal factors influence stress.
Discuss how specific behaviors, social relationships, and cultural factors can moderate stress.
