Module 8.1 Overview: Thinking, language, and intelligence

Overview

In this module, we have a lot to cover around thinking, language and intelligence -- but I am going to focus on intelligence, and more to the point, myths around intelligence. We are going to explore some myths around intelligence, and measuring intelligence, and learn how surprisingly malleable "intelligence" is.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

Describe how language use evolved in humans.
Predict what would happen if we tried to teach language to another species.
Examine how we learn language.
Explore the relationship between language and cognition.
Describe what concepts are and why they are important.
Describe some of the common problem-solving strategies and some common obstacles to problem-solving.
Critique the early views of intelligence testing.
Discuss modern intelligence tests and the characteristics of good intelligence tests.
Compare and contrast the theories of intelligence.
Discuss the neurological, hereditary, and environmental influences on intelligence.
